Finite Source Sizes and the Information Content of Macho-type Lens Search Light Curves

چکیده
If the dark halo matter is primarily composed of MACHOs toward the lower end of the possible detection range (< 10 M⊙) a fraction of the lens detection events should involve the lens crossing directly in front of the disk of the background star. Previously, Nemiroff (1987) has shown that each crossing would create an inflection point in the light curve of the MACHO event. Such inflection points would allow a measure of the time it took for the lens to cross the stellar disk. Given an independent estimate of the stellar radius by other methods, one could then obtain a more accurate estimate of the velocity of the lens. This velocity could then, in turn, be used to obtain a more accurate estimate of the mass range for the MACHO or disk star doing the lensing. A Study into the Feasibility of Obtaining Finite Source Sizes from Macho-type Microlensing Light Curves
Recent discussion of the effects of finite source size on high magnification microlensing events due to MACHOs motivates a study into the feasibility of observing such effects and extracting the source radius. Simulated observations are generated by adding Gaussian error to points sampled on theoretical microlensing light curves for a limb darkened, extended source. These simulated data sets ar...
متن کاملFinite Source Effects in Microlensing: a Precise, Easy to Implement, Fast and Numerical Stable Formalism
The goal of this paper is to provide a numerically fast and stable description for the microlensing amplification of an extended source (either uniform or limb-darkened) that holds in any amplification regime. We show that our method of evaluating the amplification can be implemented into a light-curve fitting routine using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. We compare the accuracy and computat...
متن کاملAdaptive Contouring – an efficient way to calculate microlensing light curves of extended sources
The availability of a robust and efficient routine for calculating light curves of a finite source magnified due to bending its light by the gravitational field of an intervening binary lens is essential for determining the characteristics of planets in such microlensing events, as well as for modelling stellar lens binaries and resolving the brightness profile of the source star. However, the ...
متن کاملWhere are the binary source galactic microlensing events?
Among the galactic microlensing events detected by the 4 observing groups EROS (Aubourg et al. 1993), MACHO (Alcock et al. 1993, 1997a,b), OGLE (Udalski et al. 1994a-e) , and DUO (Alard et al. 1995a,b), some events show the characteristics of a binary lens, namely MACHO LMC#1 (Dominik & Hirshfeld 1994, 1996), OGLE#7 (Udalski et al. 1994d), DUO#2 (Alard et al. 1995b), MACHO LMC#9 (Bennett et al....
متن کاملMicrolensing towards M31: Candidates and Perspectives
Recent results of the SLOTT-AGAPE and POINT-AGAPE collaborations on a search for microlensing events in direction of the Andromeda galaxy, by using the pixel method, are reported. The detection of 4 microlensing events, some likely to be due to self–lensing, is discussed. One microlensing light curve is shown to be compatible with a binary lens. The present analysis still does not allow us to d...
